Seasonal Leaf Collection

Rockville vacuums leaves from neighborhood curbs twice a year, in early April and between October and December.

Tips for Leaf Collection:
  • Rake leaves by 6 a.m. on the first day of the collection period, but no earlier than one week before the collection dates to avoid grass damage or fire hazards.
  • Rake leaves into the gutter or immediately adjacent to the pavement if no curb or gutter exists. Avoid piling leaves in bike lanes or where vehicles are parked.
  • Remove all sticks, grass clippings and other large objects from leaf pile.
  • Do not use any plastic bags or dump any yard waste or leaves in storm drains.
  • Use alternative methods such as mulching or composting. Montgomery County provides free compost bins to residents and businesses.

After seasonal collection period ends, use biodegradable paper lawn bags or 32-gallon trash cans (without plastic garbage bags) to set leaves out with your weekly yard waste collection. Do not dump leaves, grass clippings or other yard waste into storm drains or streams. Although yard waste is biodegradable and may seem harmless, excess quantities can clog storm drains or cause blockages that contribute to localized flooding. Decomposing leaves can also release nutrients, stimulating algae blooms that lead to fish kills.
