Rockville to Hold Hearing on Police Role in Enforcing Federal Immigration Laws

Rockville, Maryland, March 6 – The Mayor and Council will hold a public hearing on the role of the Rockville City Police Department in the enforcement of federal immigration laws, during the Mayor and Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 6 at City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave.

On Feb. 27, the Mayor and Council discussed RCPD’s role in enforcing federal immigration laws and the options to use an ordinance, a resolution or a city policy to establish clarity on the department’s role. Councilmember Julie Palakovich Carr introduced an ordinance that would add a section titled “Fostering Human Rights,” to the city code chapter on human rights.

Individuals wishing to testify at the hearing are asked to call 240-314-8280 before 4 p.m. on March 6 to place their names on the speakers’ list. All speakers will be given three minutes. Those who do not testify during the hearing, or who wish to provide additional comments, may submit testimony in writing to cityclerk@rockvillemd.gov or to: City Clerk/Director of Council Operations, City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave., Rockville, MD 20850.

City staff will compile public input from the hearing, as well as written testimony, for further discussion by the Mayor and Council.

Parking for the Mayor and Council meeting will be available in City Hall lots, which can be accessed from Vinson and South Washington streets, where street parking is also available. Police will monitor this area and will place traffic cones to deter people from parking by residents’ driveways.

Community members in need of a modification to assist them in attending the meeting or accessing City Hall may fill out the ADA Request for Modification Form at www.rockvillemd.gov/ada and submit it to Janet Kelly, the city’s ADA coordinator, or contact her at City Hall at 240-314-8316, TTY: 240-314-8137, or relay 711.

The hearing will be broadcast live as part of the March 6 meeting on channel 11 on county cable systems. It will also be broadcast via live streaming and available on demand, a day after the meeting, at www.rockvillemd.gov/rockville11.
