Tree Planting Marks Rockville’s Celebration of Arbor Day

The City is Celebrating its 28th Year as a ‘Tree City USA’

Rockville, Maryland, April 19 – Rockville will mark Arbor Day with a tree-planting ceremony at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26 at Lone Oak Park, 1010 Grandin Ave.

The ceremony, part of the city’s celebration of Earth Month in April, will include a presentation by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service of an award from the Arbor Day Foundation recognizing Rockville as a “Tree City USA.” Students from the Park Street Children’s Center will help staff from the city’s Forestry Division with the tree planting.

The Mayor and Council on Monday issued a proclamation declaring April 26 as Arbor Day in Rockville. Find video of the proclamation presentation at www.rockvillemd.gov/AgendaCenter. Select the television icon next to the April 17 meeting listing.

It is the 28th consecutive year Rockville has received the “Tree City USA” designation. To be named a Tree City USA, a city must have:
  • A tree board—a function served by Rockville’s Recreation and Park Advisory Board.
  • A community tree ordinance. The city’s Forest and Tree Preservation Ordinance has been in place since 1992.
  • A community forest program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita. Rockville’s budget provides about $20 per capita for tree maintenance and planting.
  • An Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
Rockville also received a 2016 PLANT (People Loving And Nurturing Trees) Green Award from the Maryland Urban and Community Forest Committee. Green is the highest level of the PLANT award. Rockville has received this recognition for more than 15 years.
