UNTITLED
Megan Marlatt (Orange, Va.)
From the artist: This mural will be a tromp l’oeil store window to display Rockville’s history and present day diverse population in the forms of hats. The design depicts the rich history of Rockville and its multiethnic community. The four arches above the hat window represent the people of many ethnicities that comprise Rockville (such as people who are Asian, Caucasian, Latino and African-American) and the four seasons (autumn, winter, spring and fall).
CORNERSTONE
William Cochran (Frederick, Md.)
From the artist: This mural celebrates the people and institutions that built Rockville as a diverse community. Artifacts from various periods are displayed in a mythical, almost dream-like way. A series of historic photos and documents are clipped lightly to a stretched copper wire. A fragment from the “Great Law in Onondaga” in Native American history appears in the artwork. “Liberty” is depicted as a very young child of multiple ancestral backgrounds.
WE FLOW INTO ONE STREAM
William Swetcharnik (Mount Airy, Md.)
From the artist: This mural combines several important messages about Rockville, its history, its environment and its future as an increasingly multi-ethnic community. The name Rockville was inspired by its “Rock Creek.” The mural also will include miniature paintings in the wainscot area and inscriptions in many languages around the painting.
