DRIVING THE FUTURE OF ROCKVILLE
Gordon Huether (Napa, Calif.)
From the artist:This sculpture takes a segment of a map from 1960 and transcribes it into a 22 feet high by seven feet wide wallmounted element. Super imposed, layered on a different plane, is a map of the exact same area in the present day. The multiple layers of steel will be bright yellow, red and blue representing the full spectrum of color as a metaphor for the highly diverse culture of Rockville.
CROSSROADS
Craig Kraft (Washington, D.C.)
From the artist: Rockville is and has always been an important crossroad community. This neon glass and aluminum sculpture will reflect off the existing architecture, injecting the landscape both day and night with energy, evoking Rockville’s pioneering spirit in the technology and scientific fields. The 16 feet high by 30 feet wide by four feet deep sculpture will be mounted above the crossroad in the center of Rockville.
THE SPIRIT OF ROCKVILLE TAKES FLIGHT
Deirdre Saunder (Potomac, Md.)
From the artist:This mosaic glass tile sculpture depicts soaring birds. The bird is a unifying, universal symbol with powerful yet varied significance to so many different cultures. The bird is both calming and uplifting, in contrast to the hustle and bustle of modern life. The iridized tile changes color as it is viewed from different angles, different times of the day, and in different weather conditions. It thus represents movement of time.
