‘Buy Rockville’ Campaign Aims to Bring About a Lifestyle Change

Buy RockvilleA citywide campaign to support Rockville businesses by encouraging residents to shop in the city is nearing the end of its first month and beginning to gain momentum. The campaign, which kicked off on Black Friday, is being led by Rockville Economic Development, Inc., and Rockville Chamber of Commerce in response to the Rockville Mayor and Council’s call to action for residents to unite in support of businesses located in the city.

And while the campaign kicked off at the start of the holiday shopping season, it is a campaign that the Mayor and Council, as well as economic officials and businesses, hope will be long-lasting.

“We’re certainly hoping it’s a lifestyle change,” said Mayor Susan R. Hoffmann. “We want people to continue to try to find whatever they’re looking for – whether it’s a service or retail or a restaurant – in the City.”

Through the campaign, the Rockville Chamber of Commerce and REDI hope to raise awareness about the one-of-a-kind shops in Rockville, the need and opportunity to make a difference locally, and the contribution shopping locally makes to the greater good of the community.

“In some ways, it’s just really showing support,” Hoffmann said emphasizing that the campaign is an economic development tool for Rockville. “We can’t change the economic picture, but we certainly can ask residents to help their local businesses.”

The proclamation highlights Rockville’s variety of shopping and dining experiences, including unique specialty stores and ethnic eateries, as well as national and regional retailers. It emphasizes that money spent locally contributes to the City’s economic vitality. It goes on to encourage residents to shop locally, highlighting that their needs can be met within a 5-mile distance that will save time, energy and gasoline.
