Cable Television / Telecommunications

Competition in cable television and other advanced communications technologies is coming to Rockville. The Mayor and Council have approved an agreement with Verizon setting the terms and conditions under which Verizon can install fiber-optic cable in the City’s rights-of-way. Additionally, the Mayor and Council also have approved a cable communications franchise agreement with Verizon allowing Verizon to provide cable television services over its new network in Rockville.

Verizon has begun to install the fiber-optic cable for its Fiber To The Premises (FTTP) project. This is a construction project that involves installing fiber primarily along streets and other rights-of-way. Much of the work has been above ground installation, attaching to poles where Verizon has copper wire attached. Verizon also has started doing some underground work. Verizon posts its construction schedules on its Web site at www.verizon.com/md. This part of the project is essentially the "backbone" of the network from which FiOS connections will be made to individual residences at the request of the customer.

Verizon will be using its marketing tools to inform the community when FiOS service will be available for ordering to individual neighborhoods and areas. Verizon has the lead responsibility for informing the community about its construction project and when and where FiOS will be made available. There are several ways residents can contact Verizon to ask about these schedules. Contact information is listed below.

The Mayor and Council also have approved a cable communications franchise agreement with Verizon allowing Verizon to provide cable television services over its new network in Rockville.  Additionally, residents may contact Verizon at the information below.

The other cable provider in Rockville, Comcast, has its network in place and has been offering service for several years. Inquires and complaints about Comcast should first be directed to the company at the contact information below. If the contact with the company fails to resolve questions and complaints, customers may contact the County Cable Office at the contact information below.

The City of Rockville required Verizon to conduct public outreach and notify residents about work that is about to take place or that is currently taking place. Verizon has set up designated phone lines and e-mail addresses to respond to questions and concerns. Please direct all questions to Verizon because, as it is the company's project, its officials are best able to fully answer concerns. If you are unable to resolve your concerns through Verizon, please communicate with the City's Service Request Coordinator.
