Long Term Care Insurance

Frequently Asked Questions | Presentation | Rates | Enrollment Kit

We are pleased to announce that a new Long Term Care Insurance product will be available for individuals between the ages of 18 and 85. Active employees and their family members as well as retirees will have the opportunity to purchase long term care insurance at group rates (100% participant paid) through a contract between the City of Rockville, County Agencies and The Prudential Insurance Company of America.

Long Term Care involves a wide variety of services for people with a prolonged illness, disability or cognitive disorder that keeps them from being able to care for themselves. It can range from help with day-to-day activities in the home (custodial care such as dressing, preparing meals, bathing, etc.) to more sophisticated services such as skilled nursing care in your home or a nursing facility. The ultimate purpose of long-term care insurance is to help individuals maintain independence and the freedom to choose where they receive assistance while helping to preserve their assets as much as possible.

Coverage for Active Employees
Long term care insurance will be offered to eligible employees on a "guaranteed issue" basis provided they enroll during the initial offering period that runs from May 12 - 23, 2008, with the coverage effective June 1, 2008. Guaranteed issue means you cannot be denied coverage, even if you have a pre-existing medical condition. However, once the initial offering period expires, coverage can be denied if you do not meet the insurability standards of Prudential. All regular full-time and part-time benefited employees who are eligible for benefits and who are actively at work on June 1, 2008 are eligible for guaranteed issue.

Coverage for Family Members
Long term care insurance will be offered to family members of all eligible employees and retirees at group rates. Eligible family members include your spouse, eligible domestic partner, parents, grandparents and parents-in-law. However, coverage for family members is not being offered on a guaranteed issue basis. Family members who wish to apply for this coverage must meet Prudential's underwriting standards and coverage can be denied if the applicant is deemed to be medically ineligible. Please note that children are not included as eligible family members and are not eligible to enroll in this plan.
