Chesapeake Bay Community Award The City of Rockville was recertified in November 2005 as a Gold level Chesapeake Bay Partner, the highest level of distinction in the Chesapeake Bay Partner Community Awards Program. Rockville received the award for the City’s demonstrated commitment to restoring and protecting the Bay, its rivers and its streams. Commuter Connection Award Commuter Connections is a regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. The Commuter Connections Annual Employer Recognition Awards recognizes employers who have voluntarily initiated programs that facilitate the use of alternative commuting methods such as transit, teleworking, carpooling/vanpooling and bicycling. These methods help to mitigate traffic congestion and provide for cleaner air through reduced auto emissions. Rockville received the Consumer Choice Initiative Award for Telecommuting (2002). President's Volunteer Service Award In September 2007, EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson presented the City of Rockville’s Commission on the Environment with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for their outstanding work to improve public health and create a healthier environment. Some of the valuable work done by the commission included reviewing and commenting on a draft water quality protection ordinance, reviewing a proposal to reinvent how Rockville handles refuse and recycling, commenting on energy-efficiency and green-building opportunities for a proposed community center, and recommending a green building and development policy. PISCES Award EPA issued the City of Rockville its 2007 Performance and Innovation in the State Revolving Fund (SRF) Creating Environmental Success (PISCES) Award. This award is designed to recognize SRF borrowers that have been the most innovative and effective at advancing EPA’s goals of performance and protection through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund program. Rockville received the award for its Watts Branch Stream Restoration project. The Restoration project was designed to minimize and control channel erosion, reduce pollutant loadings from the eroding stream banks, enhance stream and forest habitat, protect and enhance existing wetlands, control invasive vegetation and establish native plants, as well as, protect existing utilities and retaining walls.
Commuter Choice Leadership "Best Workplace for Commuters SM" The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized the City of Rockville in 2003 for contributing to easing commuting traffic in the Washington metropolitan area. The Commuter Choice Leadership “Best Workplace for Commuters SM” designation recognizes employers who are working to reduce traffic congestion and traffic-related air pollution. The City's Parc-It program "efforts ensure that the ride to work – and to a clean environment – will be smoother for generations to come." Maryland Community Forest Council PLANT GREEN Award For the second year, the City of Rockville was awarded the Maryland Community Forest Council PLANT GREEN award. People Loving And Nurturing Trees, or PLANT, is a statewide award program to recognize communities for their tree planting and tree care efforts. the GREEN award represents the highest PLANT honor and recognizes a community that has developed a well-established urban forestry program. This coveted award is reserved for programs that are funded, fully functional and staffed by qualified professionals (including volunteer assistance).
City of Rockville Environmental Excellence Awards The City of Rockville Environmental Excellence Awards (EEA) are presented to an individual or organization by the Mayor and Council to recognize outstanding achievement or service to the environment in Rockville. Nominations and supplemental materials are received by the Environment Commission, which will review these materials and as appropriate recommend awards to the Mayor and Council.
Eligible individuals must live, work, or study within the City. Eligible organizations must have an office in Rockville or must be able to demonstrate significant operations within the city limits. Building projects considered as part of a nomination must be within the City. |
