What Happens to Our Trash?

City of Rockville residents generate approximately 22,000 tons of waste (everything hauled away from homes including trash and recyclables) annually. To put that in perspective this equals the weight of about 16,500 Toyota Corollas. The City disposes of approximately 14,300 tons of trash (65%) at the Montgomery County Transfer Station at a cost to the City of about $800,000. The trash is then taken to a resource recovery facility in Dickerson where it is incinerated to generate electricity. The resulting waste ash is disposed of in a landfill in Southern Virginia.

Trash vs. Recycling
Rockville sends about 7,700 tons of recyclables (35%) to a sorting center each year and receives between $10 and $45 dollars a ton depending on the recyclable type.
Everyone can have a major impact on the amount of waste produced in our City by becoming aware of how much they throw out and by changing some of their habits about buying and using things. We can reduce, reuse and recycle products to gain the maximum practical benefits and to generate the minimum amount of trash.
