City of Rockville residents generate approximately 19,763 tons of refuse and recycling annually. To put that in perspective, the amount equals the weight of about 16,500 Toyota Corollas. The City disposes of approximately 12,040 tons of trash (61 percent) at the Montgomery County Transfer Station. The trash is then taken to a resource recovery facility in Dickerson where it is incinerated to generate electricity. The resulting waste ash is disposed of in a landfill in Southern Virginia. Leaves are taken to a Montgomery County compost facility.
| Trash vs. Recycling | Refuse and leaf disposal costs the City approximately $1 million dollars per year. The City sells its recyclables, electronics and scrap metal (about 37 percent of the total amount of material) for market prices each month. | Everyone can have a major impact on the amount of waste produced in our City by becoming aware of how much they throw out and by changing some of their habits about buying and using things. We can reduce, reuse and recycle products to gain the maximum practical benefits and to generate the minimum amount of trash. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
