Rockville has a history of strong leadership in sustainability. In 2007, the Mayor and Council adopted the Strategy for a Sustainable Rockville, a comprehensive strategy to make Rockville more sustainable and environmentally sensitive. While this strategy primarily targeted City activities, the City encouraged similar actions by individual businesses and residents.
On Oct. 24, 2011, the Mayor and Council reconfirmed their commitment to sustainability by joining the Sustainable Maryland Certified (SMC) program. SMC is a new initiative of the University of Maryland and the Maryland Municipal League (MML) to help municipalities in Maryland go green, control costs and save money and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term. The basic definition of sustainability is “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs” (Brundtland Report, Our Common Future, 1987).
Through the Sustainable Maryland Certified program, municipal governments around Maryland have made a formal commitment to move their operations and their cities towards more sustainable futures – futures that maximize the social, environmental and economic well-being of their citizens. In other words, sustainability seeks to optimize the following: - Prosperity - support local economies and community resources
- Planet - practice responsible environmental management and conservation
- People - embrace social equity, fairness, health and wellness
