Storm Drain Marker Program

Storm Drain MarkerAre you an elementary or middle school student who wants to give Rockville’s streams and wetlands a helping hand?

Help spread the word about water pollution prevention by signing up for our Storm Drain Marker Program.

Storm drain markers are small, colorful signs that are attached to the sidewalk on top of storm drains. They are very important because they educate and remind people that anything dumped into the storm drains will flow straight into our local streams and creeks. In Rockville, it will end up in one of three watersheds: Watts Branch, Cabin John, or Rock Creek. It will then reach the Potomac River and later reach the Chesapeake Bay.

Many people think that our storm drains are connected to the sewer system and pass through a treatment plant where the water will be cleaned. It is very important to tell people this is not true. The storm drain markers can help do that.

What Materials Do I Need?

The City will provide everything you need. The only thing we need from you is your enthusiasm for protecting your local watershed!

In just a couple of hours, you can safeguard your neighborhood from illegal dumping. In addition to the markers, you can help by handing out door hangers with facts about the storm drain, and what people can do to protect the watershed.

We also would like you to tell us about trash and debris found around the storm drain in your neighborhood. This will help us know what types of pollutants are reaching our City waters.

How Do I Sign Up?

If you wish to sign up, or have any questions about the Storm Drain Marker Program, call 240-314-8877 or e-mail the Program Coordinator.
