Stormwater Management: Green Roofs

Green roofs are an excellent way to reduce stormwater runoff because they soak up a significant amount of rain, reducing the amount of stormwater discharge from a residence.  Researchers at North Carolina State University have found that a 3 inch green roof can retain approximately 6/10 of an inch of rain for each rainfall event, even when storms come on consecutive days. The Center for Green Roof Research at Penn State University reports that a 4 inch green roof can retain 50 percent of total rainfall over a series of storm events.

Why Green Your Roof?

  1. They are beautiful and can add value to your property.
  2. Buildings with green roofs are warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, reducing heating and cooling costs.
  3. They reduce the “heat island” effect.
  4. They absorb more noise pollution than standard buildings.
