Rockville will mark its sesquicentennial – occurring every 150 years – anniversary as an incorporated city on March 10, 2010. The city received its incorporation from the state legislature on March 10, 1860. The city has grown considerably since the community of farmers and shop owners it once was to the more urban community that is home to a growing biotech industry. But despite the burgeoning growth from a sleepy hamlet to a nationally recognized place to live, Rockville has worked to maintain its sense of community. The City of Rockville is approximately 13 square miles and is made up of neighborhoods, rich in history and diversity. Rockville is known for its booming technology corridor along Interstate 270, as well as for providing amenities such as Town Center, F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre and hundreds of acres of parks. With a population reaching upwards of 64,000 residents, Rockville is one of the largest cities in Maryland. "The Sesquicentennial of Rockville, Local Government at 150 Years"
