MAIN STAGE      7 p.m.

Jah Works Jah Works
Jah Works is a Baltimore-based band of brothers dedicated to writing, recording and performing original reggae music. While rooted firmly in the tradition of authentic Jamaican roots and dancehall, the band also blends elements of hip-hop and popular music into its mix. A heavy dose of drum and bass combined with sweet melodies and catchy hooks are the group's trademarks.

Formed officially in the spring of 1993, Jah Works has been blazing the live music scene ever since.  With an independent mindset and a strong work ethic, the band has written and produced eight albums to date. The band is currently finishing its ninth album and is planning a tour in support of its release.

Soul AsylumSoul Asylum
Renewed and revitalized, Soul Asylum founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy return to rock’s front line with The Silver Lining, their first new studio release since 1998’s Candy From a Stranger. Soul Asylum’s ninth full-length album is every bit as quirky and off-centered cut-to-the-bone rock as its hardcore fans have come to expect, an indication that the Minneapolis band has lost none of its edge.

True survivors of the rock struggle, whose home-made post-punk ethos made the group one of the cornerstones of the No Depression movement in the ’90s, Soul Asylum is living proof of the "do-it-yourself" ethic that has always meant life or death to rock bands in the American heartland. The roots of Soul Asylum are in the group known as Loud Fast Rules, formed out of high school in 1981 by teenagers Dave Pirner (songwriter, lead vocals and guitar, but originally on drums), Dan Murphy (guitar) and Karl Mueller (bass).

By the time the group signed with Twin/Tone Records in 1984, Grant Young had become its permanent drummer (until 1995) and the name had changed to Soul Asylum. Soul Asylum recorded three high-energy albums for Twin/Tone: Say What You Will Clarence… Karl Sold the Truck (1984), Made To Be Broken (1986, those first two produced by Bob Mould) and While You Were Out (also 1986, produced by ex-Suicide Commando Chris Osgood). Nevertheless, the band graduated to its first level of wide acclaim with the album that followed, Hang Time (1988), produced by iconic downtown New York rock figure Lenny Kaye, erstwhile member of the Patti Smith Group.

The final Twin/Tone-A&M outing, And the Horse They Rode In On (1990), was produced by another New York hipster, Steve Jordan. In late 1995, Murphy and his mates in Golden Smog (who now included Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy) issued their first full-length album of mostly original material, Down by the Old Mainstream, which rose to No. 14 on the Heatseekers chart.

PLAZA STAGE
Old Man BrownOld Man Brown
1:30-3 p.m.

Baltimore-based Old Man Brown plays original rock, blues, soul and funk that honors earlier traditions with respectful arrangements and the highest standards of musicianship. Old Man Brown's repertoire includes an enticing collection of original songs written by keyboardist and singer Adam Scott-Wakefield and his late brother, drummer John Scott-Wakefield. They craved the freedom of their own band and in 2001 reunited with long-time friends and fellow musicians Marshall Chapman (guitar), Paul Lewis (bass) and Alex Rankin (guitar).

The guys gathered on a farm in central New Hampshire, hosted by Chapman’s stepfather, Peter Brown, aka “Old Man Brown,” who opened his house to the band and cleaned out a “studio” in the barn for jamming. Thus Old Man Brown born.

I
n 2006 Johnny Neel (The Allman Brothers, Dickey Betts Band) heard about the band from a friend in Baltimore and after listening to a demo wanted to work with the band. In July, Old Man Brown went to Johnny’s studio in Nashville, Straight-up Sound Studios, and collaborated on their first full length CD, “Return."

 Reptiles Alive
Reptiles Alive! LLC is the realized dream of Caroline Seitz. Combining her expert public presentation skills with non-releasable animals she had rescued as a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, Caroline's programs quickly became popular. In 1998, Caroline was presenting so many shows, she had to bring help. Staff member Jeff did not want to answer the phone by saying "Reptile Lady," so the name was officially changed to Reptiles Alive! LLC.

Since then, Reptiles Alive! LLC has grown in reputation and popularity. It has been featured on television, radio and in newspapers. Each year Reptiles Alive! LLC assists animal control agencies and police departments with reptile rescues. It teaches reptile classes for wildlife organizations. And of course, Reptiles Alive!
