The City of Rockville and U.S. Census Bureau is asking for your help in order to ensure appropriate representation of all residents - people of all races and ethnic groups, both citizens and non-citizens.
The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years. The census will show state population counts and determine representation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
It is important that every person living in Rockville is counted on Census Day, April 1, 2010.
Because federal and state funding is often awarded based on population figures from the census, an undercount of just 100 of the City’s residents translates to a loss of $100,000 a year or $1 million in federal revenue over the decade and considerably more in state funds distribution. An accurate count also contributes to local planning efforts.
Census questionnaires will be delivered or mailed to households in March 2010. On Census day every residence will complete the short questionnaire (10 questions) that is simple and fast to complete and return. It will be available in six languages with language assistance available for 59 different languages.
The forms are completely confidential and households that return the forms will not be visited by a U.S. Census worker.
To get involved you may create or join a local complete count committee. Local complete count committees are responsible for promoting volunteer and employment opportunities, encouraging participation in the census, identifying partners and developing targeted outreach to hard to count populations and neighborhoods.
For more information about the City’s complete count committee or volunteer opportunities contact Shannon Loomis at 240-314-8117 or sloomis@rockvillemd.gov.
