Minutes of the Cultural Arts Commission

Chairperson John Moser called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in the Black-Eyed Susan Room at Rockville City Hall.

Re:  Approval of the Minutes

The Minutes of the June 11th Cultural Arts Commission meeting were unanimously approved. 

Re:  Chairperson’s Report

John Moser reported that the Mayor and Council awarded the $28,000 art commission to William Cochran for a trompe l’oeil painting for the concave wall at the corner of N. Washington Street and Beall Avenue.

Re:  Staff Report

Betty Wisda distributed copies of the Staff Report and the Rockville Town Square Art Projects Report.  She also redistributed the email that contained the Piano Competition Proposal submitted by Deborah Brown.  The Cultural Arts Commission requested a presentation by Ms. Brown at their September meeting.
 
Re:  Task Force/Committee Updates

Art in Public Places 
Chairperson George Northway requested staff to prepare a draft of the Rockville City Hall Call for Entries for the September 10th meeting. 

Special Events/Sampler
Carole Butler, Chairperson- No report.

Private Sector Art (inactive)
Chairperson George Northway requested staff to arrange for a tour of private sector art in early winter.

Outreach
Rose Garvin Aquilino, Chairperson- No report

Rockville Town Center 
John Moser, Chairperson- No report.

Arts Facilities
Jerry Callistein, Chairperson, reported that a meeting of the Arts Facilities Committee and the presidents of the resident companies has been scheduled for July 14th to discuss the memorandum of understanding.

Re:  Rockville Town Square Art Project #2 

Betty Wisda provided a brief description of the three art proposals that were presented by the finalists to the Artist Nomination Committee on June 16th.  Jerry Callistein reported that the committee unanimously recommended that Judith Inglese be awarded the $60,000 art commission for her ceramic tile murals.  The committee consists of Jerry Callistein, Ken Lechter, and Tamar Maravilla, Cultural Arts Commissioners; Sue Pierce and Nancy Regelin, Art in Town Center Task Force; Jonathan Roth, Rockville resident; Jack Jaeger, developer representative; and June Linowitz, art expert.  The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously concurred with the Artist Nomination Committee’s recommendation.

The next meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10 in the Black-Eyed Susan Room at Rockville City Hall.  Due to Yom Kippur, the October 8th meeting has been changed to October 15th.
