Minutes of the Cultural Arts Commission

Chairperson John Moser called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in the Black-Eyed Susan Room at Rockville City Hall.

Re:  Approval of the Minutes
The Minutes of the Cultural Arts Commission November 15th meeting were unanimously approved.  

Re:  Chairperson’s Report
John Moser reported the following items. 

  1. Representatives from Rockville Little Theatre, Rockville Musical Theatre, Victorian Lyric Opera Company, Cultural Arts Commission and City staff met to discuss the Memorandum of Understanding on November 18th.
     
  2. At their November 17th meeting, the Mayor and Council reappointed Rose Garvin Aquilino to serve on the Cultural Arts Commission.
     
  3. The Rockville Arts Sampler was a huge success; he thanked Carole Butler, Ken Lechter and Jerry Callistein for their effort.  A special thank you was extended to Betty Wisda for her hard work towards the success of the event.

Re:  Staff Report
Betty Wisda distributed copies of the Staff Report and the Rockville Town Square Art Projects Report.  She reported that Megan Marlatt installed the hat-themed banner on the condominium façade on E. Middle Lane on November 14th.  She also reported that she met with Deborah Brown, North Potomac School of Music representative, regarding the Rockville Piano and Strings Competition.  The meeting was very productive and that they developed a suggested implementation plan.    

Re:  Task Force/Committee Updates

Art in Public Places  
George Northway, Chairperson- no report. 

Betty Wisda requested a meeting of the Art In Public Places Committee to discuss potential sites for the Arts and Innovation Center and William Gibbs art projects as well as the temporary art in Rockville Town Square.  She suggested an on-site meeting; the committee will meet on Tuesday, November 25th.

Special Events/Sampler
Carole Butler, Chairperson, reported that she received several compliments from audience members regarding the talent of the performers.  She thanked Betty Wisda for coordinating the vignettes presented by the City-sponsored performing arts groups and the resident companies as well as arranging the attendance of the award winners.  Mayor Susan Hoffmann enjoyed presenting the Rockville Arts Awards to the selected winners.  Betty Wisda reported that the Rockville Arts Sampler is scheduled to air on Rockville Channel 11 throughout the month of November.

Private Sector Art (inactive)
George Northway, Chairperson- No report.

Outreach
Rose Garvin Aquilino, Chairperson, reported that the City received seven applications.  She will schedule a meeting of the Outreach Committee and the Arts Division staff to review the applications in December.

Rockville Town Center  
John Moser, Chairperson- No report.

Arts Facilities
Jerry Callistein, Chairperson, reported that there was productive dialogue between the representatives of Rockville Little Theatre, Rockville Musical Theatre, Victorian Lyric Opera Company, Cultural Arts Commission and City staff regarding the memorandum of understanding.  The members discussed City’s responsibilities and resident companies responsibilities.  The next meeting will be in early December.

Re:  New Business
John Moser reported that he plans to schedule a meeting with representatives of the East Rockville Civic Association, the Lincoln Park Civic Association, WAMTA staff, and City staff to discuss a potential public art project for the Park Road Underpass.

Re: Next Meeting
The meeting scheduled for Wednesday, December 10th has been cancelled.  The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on January 14th in the Diamondback Terrapin Room.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8 p.m.
