John Moser, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in the Blue Crab Room at Rockville City Hall. He introduced Sezin Williams who submitted an application for the vacancy on the Cultural Arts Commission. She briefly described her background in the arts.
Re: Approval of the Minutes The Minutes of the Cultural Arts Commission February 11 meeting were unanimously approved.
Re: Chairperson’s Report John Moser reported on the following items. - Jerry Callistein and he attended a meeting with presidents of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre Resident Companies and City staff regarding the memorandum of understanding on March 10.
- He reported on the recommendations of the Boards and Commissions Committee led by Councilmember Phyllis Marcuccio.
- He provided an update on the current status of the potential Park Road Underpass Art Project.
- Complimented Betty Wisda on the preparation of the Call for Entries for the Rockville City Hall, the William Gibbs and the Arts and Innovation Center Art Projects as well as the Sculpture On The Plaza for the temporary sculpture in Rockville Town Plaza.
- He distributed a memorandum to the Cultural Arts Commission from Burt Hall regarding recommended funding of two art-related projects: Spirit of Rockville-Courthouse Square Fountain and F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre- Hydraulic Pit Platform Project. After a brief discussion, the Cultural Arts Commission recommended that the Art In Public Places Committee meet and provide recommendations regarding these items at the April 14 meeting. George Northway asked staff to obtain project descriptions and detail cost estimates regarding these two art-related projects.
Re: Staff Report Betty Wisda distributed copies of the Staff Report. She reported on the following items. - “Magnet” by Charlotte Lees will be featured at the Grand Opening of Thomas Farm Community Center on March 21.
- Beverly Ress will install “Things left Behind” on Gibbs Street on March 23.
- 150 people submitted applications in the competitive and the non-competitive sections of the four division categories for the 2009 Rockville Piano and Strings Competition sponsored by the City in cooperation with the North Potomac School of Music. The competition date is April 19; the Winners’ Recital is at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre.
- On March 6, Julie Farrell and the selection panel met and reviewed applications submitted by interested artists for consideration for a 2010 exhibits at the Glenview Mansion Art Gallery.
- “Noontime Serenades” will be presented on May 6 and May 27 at VisArts.
- She reported on the following ideas suggested to incorporate the arts into the Sesquicentennial Anniversary Celebration.
a. Rockville City Hall Art Project designated as an art project to commemorate the 150th Anniversary. b. A joint concert the Rockville Concert Band and Rockville Chorus to perform during the anniversary year. c. An original work choreographed by Claudia Mangan for the Rockville Civic Ballet to perform during the anniversary year. d. The newly elected Mayor be the guest narrator for “Peter and the Wolf accompanied by the Rockville Regional Youth Orchestra.
The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously supported the suggested ideas.
Re: Task Force/Committee Updates Art in Public Places George Northway, Chairperson, no report due to the public art projects were discussed in the Chairperson’s and Staff Reports.
Special Events/Sampler Carole Butler, Chairperson- No report. Betty Wisda noted that the current Mayor and Council’s last meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 26, 2009. The new Mayor and Council will not be sworn in until Sunday, November 22, 2009. Currently, the Rockville Arts Sampler is scheduled for November 1, 2009. She suggested that the date be moved to Sunday, April 11, 2010. She also noted that next year’s Rockville Arts Sampler is scheduled on Sunday, October 31, 2010. She suggested that the date be moved to Sunday, April 11, 2011. The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously supported the suggested dates.
Private Sector Art (inactive) George Northway, Chairperson- No report. Betty Wisda will schedule a tour of private sector art in late April.
Outreach Rose Garvin Aquilino, Chairperson. Betty Wisda reported that Arthur Goldberg, “Hidden Rockville” applicant’s artwork will be on exhibit at Thomas Farm Community Center from March 21 through May 15.
Rockville Town Center John Moser, Chairperson- No report
Arts Facilities Jerry Callistein, Chairperson, reported that the presidents of Rockville Little Theatre, Rockville Musical Theatre, and Victorian Lyric Opera Company; the Cultural Arts Commission representatives and City staff mutually agreed on the draft memorandum of understanding on March 10. The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously recommended that the Mayor and Council consider the appointment of Sezin Williams to the Cultural Arts Commission. John Moser will contact Claire Funkhouser regarding the recommendation.
John Moser mentioned that his term as Chairperson should soon expire. The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously recommended that John Moser be reappointed as Chairperson. |
