Minutes of the Cultural Arts Commission

John Moser, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in the Diamondback Terrapin Room at Rockville City Hall.  

Re:  Approval of the Minutes
The Minutes of the Cultural Arts Commission May 13 meeting were unanimously approved.

Re:  Chairperson’s Report
John Moser reported on the following items.

  1. He met with Burt Hall and Betsy Thompson, Superintendent of Recreation, regarding the Cultural Arts Commission.
     
  2. He will contact Eileen Mader and Richard Lurye regarding their intent on continuing to serve on the Cultural Arts Commission due to their recent illnesses.
     
  3. There will be no meeting in July.

Re:  Staff Report
Betty Wisda distributed copies of the Staff Report.  

Re:  Task Force/Committee Updates
Art in Public Places  
George Northway, Chairperson, reported that the Art In Public Places Committee met and made the following recommendations.

  1. The Art in Public Places Committee recommends contracting an artist to create a site-specific work of art for the plaza surrounding the “Spirit of Rockville” fountain for an all-inclusive budget of $35,000.  The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously agreed to the recommendation.
     
  2. The Art in Public Places Committee recommends contracting an artist to create a site-specific work of art for the corner of Park Road and South Stonestreet for an all-inclusive budget of $30,000.  The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously agreed to the recommendation.
     
  3. The Art in Public Places Committee recommends deaccession of “Beacon” based on the cost to restore the work of art to its original condition.  The Art in Public Places Committee recommends contracting an artist to create a site-specific work of art for the corner of Falls Road and Wootton Parkway for an all-inclusive budget of $35,000.  The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously agreed to the two recommendations.

The Art in Public Places Committee will review the Art in Public Places Master Plan in late September.

Special Events/Sampler
Carole Butler, Chairperson- No report.
Betty Wisda reported that the Rockville Arts Sampler is scheduled at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 11 at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre.  

Private Sector Art (inactive)
George Northway, Chairperson- No report.  

Outreach
Rose Garvin Aquilino, Chairperson- No report.
Betty Wisda reported that Samantha Brown, a “Hidden Rockville” applicant, is exhibiting her photographs at the Thomas Farm Community Center.

Re:  Brainstorm Session- Future Projects
The Cultural Arts Commissioners will submit a list of potential projects to Betty Wisda prior to the August meeting.
