Minutes of the Cultural Arts Commission Wednesday, December 16, 2009 | ||||||||

John Moser, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in the Diamondback Terrapin Room at Rockville City Hall. 1. He will be presenting the art proposals and the recommendations of the Artist Nomination Committee and the Cultural Arts Commission to the Mayor and Council for their approval regarding the Arts and Innovation Center, the Rockville City Hall and the William Gibbs projects at the January 11, 2010 meeting. 2. He invited Howard Faulkner to share his arts background with the commissioners as well as his desire to serve on the Cultural Arts Commission. 1. There are no specifications for the mosaic tile design for the fountain basin located at the corner of Beall Avenue and Maryland Avenue. She suggested that the City of Rockville use the Limited, Invitational Competition to seek artists with public art experience with mosaic tile designs and fountains. The City used this selection process with the banner project on E. Middle Lane. The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously recommended the use of the Invitational, Limited Competition for the fountain basin project. The Cultural Arts Commission recommended that an all-inclusive budget of $15,000 for this art project. 2. Charlotte Lees prefers the distance between the columns to be 6 ½’ diagonally from the front columns to the back columns and 19 ½’ between the two back columns. The Cultural Arts Commission concurred with there previous recommendation that the Mayor and Council award the $75,000 art commission to Charlotte Lees for her stainless steel, black plexiglass, and polished granite sculpture representing the achievements of William Gibbs. 3. The City has hired Tito Construction, Inc. to prepare and plaster the concave niche wall on the corner of N. Washington Street and Beall Avenue. The contractor will need several days above 50 degrees to complete the required work. Art in Public Places |
