Minutes of the Cultural Arts Commission

John Moser, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in the Black-Eyed Susan Room at Rockville City Hall.  

Re:  Approval of the Minutes
The Cultural Arts Commission Minutes for the February 17 meeting were unanimously approved.

Re:  Chairperson’s Report
John Moser reported on the following items.

  1. The Mayor and Council unanimously approved the award of $75,000 art commission to Charlotte Lees for her stainless steel, black Plexiglas and polished granite sculpture representing the achievements of William Gibbs.
     
  2. He read a thank you note from Scott Ullery regarding the Cultural Arts Commission’s concurrence with suspending the Art in Public Places project ($1 per capita) for fiscal year 2011.
     
  3. He complimented Betty Wisda on the good job she did on the preparation for the Call for Entries for the Courthouse Square Park Plaza, East Rockville and Rockville Swim and Fitness Center Meeting /Fitness Room Art Projects.

Re:  Arts Involvement in Twinbrook Presentation
Christina Ginsberg distributed a handout she had prepared regarding art installations commissioned through the City’s Art in Public Places program, pending projects in Twinbrook Commons and potential sites for art in the Twinbrook area.

Re:  Staff Report
Betty Wisda distributed copies of the Staff Report and the Art In Public Places Report.  

Re:  Task Force/Committee Updates
Art in Public Places  
George Northway, Chairperson, made a motion to change the budget for the Orchard Ridge Park Art Project from $35,000 to $50,000.  After discussion, he withdrew his motion and recommended that the Orchard Ridge Park Art Project be deferred for an unspecified period of time.  The Cultural Arts Commission concurred with his recommendation.  Betty Wisda reminded the commission that they had recommended a $35,000 budget for this art project to the Mayor and Council and that the project was a goal of the commission for fiscal year 2011.

Special Events/Sampler
Carole Butler, Chairperson, reminded the Cultural Arts Commission that the Rockville Arts Sampler is scheduled at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 11 at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre.

Private Sector Art (inactive)
George Northway, Chairperson- No report.  

Outreach
Rose Garvin Aquilino, Chairperson, scheduled a meeting with the committee to review the “Hidden Rockville” applications on Tuesday, March 16.

Arts Facilities
Jerry Callistein, Chairperson- No report.
    
Re: Culture and Entertainment Plan
The Cultural Arts Commission members were asked to submit comments to Betty Wisda by Monday, March 15.

Re:  New Business
The Cultural Arts Commission agreed to dedicate the April 14 meeting for a brainstorming session on potential visual, performing, and literary arts projects.

Re: Next Meeting
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14 in the Black-Eyed Susan Room at Rockville City Hall.
