Re: Approval of the Minutes The Cultural Arts Commission Minutes for the March 10 meeting were unanimously approved.
Re: Chairperson’s Report John Moser reported on the following items. 1. He reported that he attended the Public Hearing on April 12 to report to the Mayor and Council that the Cultural Arts Commission concur with the staff’s recommendation to suspend the funding for the Art In Public Places program ($1/capita) for Fiscal Year 2011 due to the current economic situation. 2. He invited the presidents of Rockville Little Theatre, Rockville Musical Theatre and Victorian Lyric Opera Company to the September meeting to share comments on the relationship between the City of Rockville and their organizations based on the Memorandum of Understanding. 3. He complimented Betty Wisda on her time and efforts that contributed to the success of the Twelfth Annual Rockville Arts Sampler. He also thanked Carole Butler, Ken Lechter and Jerry Callistein on their involvement with the sampler. Arts Facilities Jerry Callistein, Chairperson- No report. Re: Fountain Basin Art Project The finalists’ art proposals the fountain basin project, located at the corner of Beall Avenue and Maryland Avenue, were presented to the Cultural Arts Commission as well as the recommendation of the Artist Nomination Committee. The Cultural Arts Commission unanimously recommended that the Mayor and Council award the $15,000 commission to Valerie Theberge of Mount Rainier, Maryland for her mosaic tile design for the fountain basin.
Re: Brainstorming Session The Cultural Arts Commission discussed potential visual, performing and literary arts programs. The following list are ideas and not in a priority ranking. - Gateway Public Art Projects (main entrances into the City corporate limits; such as, Falls Road, Norbeck Road, and Veirs Mill Road, Route 355 North and Route 355 South)
- Community Art Projects (temporary arts projects by teens; such as the exterior murals at Lincoln Park Community Center and the Rockville Senior Center)
- Artist in Residence Program (Trade off for space for services; use of talent from “Hidden Rockville” program, use of third floor at Glenview Mansion)
- Historical Art-Based Project (Partnership with Peerless Rockville)
- Literary Arts Offerings (Partnership with F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Conference, Inc.)
- Equipment for the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre
- Alternative Performing Arts Venues (portable light board, lights and trees)
- Emergency Grants for Non-Profit (501(c)3) Organizations (Relief for struggling organizations- “Arts Tarp”)
