DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY:

Jane Bradley erected this rectangular colonial revival, two-story, nine-room brick home with classical detailing about 1920 to replace a large frame boarding house owned by her mother, Rebecca Veirs,. The existing driveway extends about 160 feet along the west side of the property, approximately 10 feet from the side boundary line, to a paved parking area and brick garage.

REQUEST:

The applicant requests approval to repave the existing driveway with brick-imprinted asphalt called StreetPrint, which will be finished in a brick terra cotta color.

 

STAFF COMMENTS/ RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends Approval of HDC98-0118 based on site visits, proposed design, and material list submitted by applicant.

  1. Historic, archeological, or architectural value and significance of the site or structure and its relationship to the historic, archeological, or architectural significance of the surrounding area.
  2. The proposed driveway is not obtrusive from the public way and will harmonize with the two-story brick structure and the surrounding area.

  3. The relationship of the exterior architectural features of the structure to the remainder of the entire structure and to the surrounding area
  4. The adjacent house at 203 W. Montgomery is one of several area properties which have brick walkways. The proposed driveway is consistent with the existing surroundings.

  5. The general compatibility of exterior design, scale, proportion, arrangement, texture, and materials proposed to be used.
  6. The proposed driveway will duplicate the existing driveway in scale, proportions, and arrangement. It will differ only in texture, from asphalt and gravel to imprinted brick-colored asphalt. The surface will be more imperious.

  7. To any other factors, including aesthetic factors, which the Commission deems to be pertinent.
  8. Environmental factors: Impact of impervious paving on trees.

 

Approval is subject to the following conditions:

  1. That the Applicant apply for and receive approval for the paving section from the Department of Public Works.
  2. Driveway imprint design shall be approved by the HDC.

 

Per Section 25-415, of the Zoning and Planning code, Paving specifications, all off-street parking and loading areas shall be paved with a minimum of:

(1) Six (6) inches of concrete; or

(2) Six (6) inches of bituminous asphalt; or

(3) Six (6) inches of compacted gravel and two (2) inches of bituminous asphalt; or

(4) Other paving as approved by the Director of the Department of Public Works and recommended by the HDC to preserve character, trees, or other considerations.
