MINUTES

I. Convene
Meeting was convened by Chair at 7:45 p.m.
II. Welcome Visitors
Returning visitor Dominique Perez was welcomed.
III. Approval of Minutes
Minutes were approved with minor corrections
IV. Chair Report:
A) Voter Registration Strategies
Mr. Wil Risso (coordinator and President for the Paraguay Independence Celebration was invited to the meeting to discuss strategies to get voter participation. There will be a Hispanic Heritage event on October 1 where Mr. Risso stated that the HRC would do well to set up a table for voter registration.
B) Divestment Meeting
The Commission was to be congratulated on the recent acknowledgement and agreement of the Mayor and Council to approve of the divestment suggestions of the HRC.
C) Attendance to HRC Meetings
Chair reiterated the fact that the Commissioners must come to the meetings especially now that they are beginning their upcoming events.
D) MLK Subcommittees
MLK Committees are forming for the upcoming event.
They will be:
a. Catering
b. Entertainment
c. Volunteers
d. Awards
V. Staff Report
A) MLK Memorial and the Exchange Students to Assistance
Staff let the Commission know that the Channel 11 would be assisting in taking video of the upcoming dedication of the MLK memorial. Staff also said that the AFS students will accompany any of the Commission that is going to the dedication to assist with the video and the interviews. There will be flyers made and there will be additional discussion about what the HRC will carry to highlight their participation in the next week.
B) Collaborative Presentation to Senior Residents
The presentation with the seniors at Town Center Apartments went well. There were about 15 seniors and all listened to the Commission’s speech and then participated in discussion about their heritage and in some cases , struggles. All appreciated each other for their differences and said that they wanted to have another event like this in the future.
C) Presentation to Wood Middle School
Staff is still working with date for presentation with the school.
VI. Open Forum
Both Josh Richards and Daron Bolat are going to leave the HRC. Josh will leave in September and Daron in August. In view of that, a new Vice Chair was nominated and approved David Smith.

Meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m. The next meeting will be September 28 at City Hall, Black – Eyed Susan Room, at 7:30 p.m.
