Nominations Open for 2008 Taff and MLK, Jr. Awards The City’s Human Rights Commission is seeking nominations for its annual F. Michael Taff Award and the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award that will be presented at the City’s 35th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. The nomination deadline for both awards is December 7, 2007. The Taff Award honors an individual or organization that has made a contribution to improving the lives of people with disabilities. This contribution may include efforts to improve accessibility for people with disabilities, raise public awareness of disability issues, or in any way further the cause of people with disabilities. The award bears the name of F. Michael Taff, former chairperson of the Rockville Human Rights Commission, who demonstrated a commitment to people with disabilities. “This award is really a statement of kindness, generosity and selflessness on behalf of the recipient,” said Janet Kelly, the City’s staff coordinator of the event. The Taff Award is open to a business, non-profit employer or individual. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Award honors a student attending a high school in Rockville who has embraced and promoted the dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Nominees for the award will be judged on their consistent attention to pursuing avenues leading to peace and/or awareness and appreciation for everyone.
