White-Tailed Deer Task Force

November 17, 2010 Meeting
Minutes and Updates
Parks Conference Room
14625 Rothgeb Drive
7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Task Force Attendees

Minutes

The meeting was dedicated to editing the policy, including the policy statement, policy recommendations, administration and management of the policy.  The goal is to have a rough draft of the entire document for editing at the next meeting.

Policy Draft/Edit
Began editing the current policy from the policy statement and incorporating the WTDTF role into the new statement.

Policy Recommendations
Worked on a Policy Recommendations section to replace the current Policy Decisions section that is on the last page of the policy.

Policy Administration
Worked on the policy administration section and moved the section to below the policy recommendations section.  Basic administration stays the same; however, it now incorporates the roles of other agencies that may be involved and includes adoption of the policy by the Mayor and Council.

Policy Management
Discussed structuring the management portion of the new policy to include a management goal and incorporate the current methodology and control plan into it.

Volunteer Assignments

Several members of the task force volunteered to work on various sections of the document.

Jackie Raiford will work on the management goal and refitting the text in Section 5 (Management of the White-Tailed Deer) of the document into a new look section.  The new section will incorporate conflict resolution and how task force yearly recommendations of current technologies, trends and recent data will manipulate management of the policy and use of the appropriate proven techniques that will be used to meet the goal(s).

Audra Lew will work on Sections 6 and 7 (Methodology and Control Plan) and, mainly, rework the methodology section.  The control measures will remain primarily the same.  Details in items such as direct reduction will be spelled out in the recommendations to the Mayor and Council.

Next Goal

When a rough draft of the new policy is complete, the next item will be the specific recommendations of the task force to the Mayor and Council.  Someone will have to volunteer to write this.  A Power Point presentation will also be needed to highlight reasons for the recommendations, including charts, maps and graphs.  Mark Kibiloski is currently working on putting together some of these items.

Mark Kibiloski volunteered to contact the City’s Public Information Office (PIO) to request editing the document and presenting the new policy to the public.

Updates

Mark Kibiloski contacted PIO the day after the meeting.  The PIO staff will work with the task force to review and edit the rough draft.  They will also work on strategies to present a new policy to the public, and will add a public information section to the policy to spell out particular means to educate the general public on deer management.

Christine Davidson volunteered to assist Audra Lew with reworking Sections 6 and 7 of the document.

Next Meeting

The tentative date for the next meeting is December 7, 2010 at 7 p.m. in the Parks Conference Room at 14625 Rothgeb Drive.  A mid-January meeting will be planned.
