A motion to approve the April minutes with revisions was made by Mary Barber and seconded by Betty Ball.  Motion carried.

TREASURER'S REPORT:

Report for the month of April was presented by the RSI Treasurer, Rusty Embrey.  George made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report and Ron seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

STANDING COMMITTEES:

A. Budget:  We spent $4,600.00 on the 25th Anniversary celebrations.  We have made more than half of what we spent on the cookbooks.  Susan Carmel donated $100 in matching funds from Verizon.  Rusty will prepare a budget for FY08 for the June meeting.

B. Ways & Means:   We have 30 tables for the Bazaar.  Betty Briscoe gave the board an information notebook about running the Bazaar.  Betty will not be here the day of the Bazaar so Mary will be in charge.

C. Bingo:   Bingo is doing very well.  The profits since July 2006 are $16,811.00.

D. Correspondence/Memorial:   Condolences were sent to the families of Doug King and Sally Kamenshine.  We received notice that Gerald Lighton will be buried at Arlington Cemetery on May 22.  We received $15 in memory of Doug King for the Carnation Players.  We received $25 in memory of Richard Miller.  Sally Kamenshine’s family is still considering what they would like the donations to go toward that are received in her memory.

E. Gift Shop:    In the month of April the Gift Shop made $997.73.  The consignors were paid $337.88.  RSI netted $619.44.

F. Thrift Shop:   The Thrift Shop netted $627.77 for the month of April.

G. Publicity:    The ad for the Spring Bazaar will be in the Gazette this Wednesday.  The ad costs $219.15 – color is an additional $30.00.

H. Senior Citizens Commission:  Phyllis Marcuccio attended the last meeting.  We heard general reports from the senior clubs.  Jonathan Triandafilou, Cirico Gonzales and Ed Duffy from the city are on an affordable housing committee.  The annual rally is on May 10 and all are encouraged to come.  Pete Santee is chairing a home maintenance program.  Needs assessment survey is going out to citizens.

I. Hispanic Services Report:  We are preparing food for the bazaar.

J. Asian Services Report:  No report.

OLD BUSINESS:

Rusty asked the Board if they were interested in trying to start Duplicate Bridge back up since losing it means a drop in income.  Rusty has the names of 5 people who may be possible directors that could work on Monday and Friday.  Jill and Melissa said that Bridge could use the Card Room only on Mondays which would limit to them to 9 tables. On  Mondays they could also use the Carnation Room but the game would have to start at 9am.  Rusty said she had heard that 50% of the players were members of the senior center.  We would want the new director to work Tuesday also.  This could possibly start in June.  Rusty will check with the potential directors to see if they are interested. Rusty has done an inventory of the bridge supplies and the Board agreed that they will not sell any items to the former Bridge group.  A letter was sent to Roz Dixon advising her that we are only sponsoring the Tuesday games and that the chairs and tables that Duplicate Bridge used are the property of the senior center.  A copy was also sent to the ACBL.

The Investment Sub-Committee will meet on June 4 and the members are Rusty Embrey, Joan Galasso, Tom Meisee, Richard Bender, Ed Frillman and Lenny Bruening.

NEW BUSINESS:

A telephone vote to purchase a grill for the center was made on May 7 – with Mary Barber, Ron Barber, Betty Hughes, Betty Briscoe, Betty Ball, and Rusty Embrey voting in favor of the purchase.  George Galasso, Terry Maxwell, Kathy Neale, Lois Brown and Teresa Harn could not be reached to vote.

The picnic at Smokey Glenn Farms is on the same day as the next RSI Board meeting.  Mary made a motion to change the date to June 12.  Betty Ball seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

STAFF REPORT:

Funds will be available on July 1 for planning and design of the expansion.  We have $100,000 from the Maryland State Legislature.  A steering committee will prepare an RFP for the architects to bid on.  There will be a public review of the construction.  We currently don’t have enough money for construction.  We will apply for $600,000 grant from Dept. of Aging.  The plans may have to be scaled down.  The $20,000 from RSI will not be needed for a while – we will use city money first.  The board will have input into the expansion design but will not be making the final decisions – the Steering Committee will do that.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:50 p.m.
