The RSI elections for 2004-2005 were held prior to the meeting. Only one member of the 2003-2004 did not seek re-election (Paula Carver) due to health issues. All other members of the Board were re-elected. Betty Briscoe was selected to fill the remaining spot. In total there were 10 people running for 7 spots.

The officer positions were decided. Ron Barber was unanimously elected to remain as President and Chairman of RSI. George Galasso was unanimously elected to serve as Vice-President. OLD BUSINESS:

The property on Wade Avenue has been emptied of most of its furniture (sold at the Spring Bazaar). Letters were sent out to five local realtors asking for their quote to represent us in the sale. We will select the best deal and put the house on the market soon. Ron arranged for the Board to tour the house on Saturday, May 22 at 2:00 p.m.

The house currently is not insured. Motion made by Louise Gregory to get property insurance for the site. Marjorie Costa seconded the motion. Motion approved.

A motion was defeated requesting that the security system be turned back on. The Board felt the security system was not needed if we have property insurance since there is nothing of value in the house.

NEW BUSINESS:

George G. asked the Board to purchase sunshades for the bocce courts. He has met with the City carpenters and they estimated it would cost $1,200-$1,500 for the shade devices. Betty Hughes made a motion to approve a maximum of $1,500 for the shades and Louise Gregory seconded the motion. Motion carried. They also asked that a trash can be placed here. Ron will talk to Ruth Hanessian to see if money donated in memory of Estelle could be used for the shades.

Juan mentioned that some of the Fitness Club members are unhappy about the new fee for membership. Jill explained that the Department has implemented a new cost recovery policy and that all City fitness rooms fall into Category 4 (Individual Benefit Facilities) which are required to recover 100% of their direct costs (i.e., equipment repair and purchase) and some of their indirect costs (i.e., Joyce’s salary, printing costs for information in the Recreation guide). As a result a fee was required. Jill will add something to the calendar which mentions the cost recovery policy.

STAFF REPORT:

The center renovation is back in full swing. The kitchen will be closed for 2 months starting May 24, 2004. The temporary kitchen will be set up in the Arts and Crafts Room. The Dining Room will progress along with the kitchen work.

The Volunteer Appreciation Party went very well. We recognized 273 volunteers with over 24,000 hours of time. Stuart Crump received the Estelle Berberian Volunteer of the Award from Ruth Hanessian. He donated his $100 award back to the Center. Three Lifetime Memberships were presented: Lois Darling, Frances Martin and Frances Loveless. Suburban Hospital was awarded the Corporate Appreciation Award. The Mayor and Councilmember Anne Robbins attended and offered some congratulatory remarks.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.  The next meeting is scheduled for June 15, 2004.
