TREASURER'S REPORT: A report for the month of September was presented. Copies will be forwarded to the city's Mayor and Council. Mary made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Betty B. seconded the motion. Motion carried. STANDING COMMITTEES: A. Budget: Steve Chappell updated the board on the investment fund. The Pershing Fund is down due to Katrina. There has been decay in bonds but stocks have done better. The account is still within the 4 ½ to 8 percent range. It is well balanced. Stocks and bonds will do better than a money market account. Steve’s commission is paid out of the general fund not the investments account. On December 12th a $100,000.00 cd will become due and we will have 10 days to make a decision. George made a motion that when cds become due that the money go into our investment account and the interest put in the general account. Mary B. seconded the motion. Motion carried. Steve will maintain the account as is – just add to the current account. Steve needs to meet with the Executive Board to discuss drafting a template of a business plan for the investment fund. He would like to arrange mailings and arrange seminars to let the community know how they can benefit the center. The Executive Board agreed to meet with him on October 27 at 9:30am. Rusty let the board know that since we are considered a business and have incorporated in our name that we cannot draw interest on the bingo account. This is why she moves money from bingo and general funds into the interest bearing money market funds. We will receive $49.95 back from the bank for the check order but normally checks are not free. We received a $500.00 donation from Barbara and Peter Weidenbruch and it was designated for trips. Rusty will call the Weidenbruch’s to confirm and ask if that’s what they want the money to go to. B. Ways & Means: Ben & Jerry’s donated 2 $5.00 gift certificates to the raffle and a thank you has already been sent. The Thrift Shop has all of their volunteers lined up for the bazaar. Vi Kemp and Marge Carter will manage the kitchen. Paula Carver has 25 crafters signed up for tables. Betty B. made a motion that this year we have a grand prize of $500.00 and a second prize of $250.00 for the raffle. Mary B. seconded the motion. Motion carried. We need help selling raffle tickets on November 1 – Congressman Van Hollen speaks about Medicare, November 8 – Election Day, November 12 and 13 – The Lions Club Train Show. We need a raffle chairman to coordinate the volunteers. Louise volunteered to work on the 8th, 12th and 13th. We also need a letter to send out to the local civic associations reminding about the bazaar. C. Bingo: We had a good turnout but we need volunteers especially in the kitchen. D. Correspondence/Memorial: We received $100.00 donation in September. E. Gift Shop: We made $1,444.00 and paid out $542.00 to consignors and put $835.65 in the bank. The Gift Shop will be open during the Train Show on November 12th and 13th. November 1st and 8th the Gift Shop would be open anyway. There was some discussion about whether or not we charge tax during the Bazaar. F. Thrift Shop: The Thrift Shop made $640.00 in September. G. Publicity: The Wednesday before the Bazaar an ad will be in the Rockville Gazette. H. Senior Citizens Commission: No report. I. Hispanic Services Report: The Hispanic club donated $76.00 to the Senior Assistance Fund. They thanked Joyce Staub for her 19 years of dedication and gave her a present at the tea. J. Asian Services Report: An Asian members family made a $100.00 donation to RSI. The singers are practicing America the Beautiful.
OLD BUSINESS: Mary B. got prices for new signs. If we order 20 signs they will be $15.00 each. They will be printed on both sides and we will also receive peel off arrows to put on them. We also need 4 Bingo signs and a Gift Shop is Open sign. Louise G. made a motion to purchase signs for the Bazaar, Gift Shop and Bingo. George seconded the motion. Motion carried. NEW BUSINESS: Betty B. brought in a flyer about the Jazz Scholarship Fund performance from Marjorie Costa. Senior Citizens appreciation day is Friday, February 17 and all seniors are invited to attend. We will post the flyer and also list the information in the newsletter. Andrew Begosh will work on our taxes – Ron brought him the information he needs. STAFF REPORT: The price for new chairs in the Carnation Room is approximately $240.00 each. Jill will have one of the custodians count chairs and see how many need to be replaced. The cost for a 10 x 15 storage shed would be $2,600.00 for preassembled and $3,000.00 if the city carpenters build it. It would be moveable so that when we expand the building it can be moved easily. George made a motion to purchase a shed for RSI storage. Betty H. seconded the motion. Motion carried. Ron will get another price on a shed and then he and Jill will pick one out. Anne Robbins suggested at the last meeting that we advertise the Gift Shop in Rockville Reports. It has not been done yet but it will be. The meeting was adjourned at 2:45 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for November 15, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. |
