Board of Directors Meeting
December 21, 2004

 

The meeting of the Rockville Seniors Inc. was held on Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at the Rockville Senior Center.  The meeting was called to order by Chairman Ron Barber at 1:05 p.m. followed by a moment of silent prayer.

STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT: Jill Hall

The minutes from the November 16, 2004 meeting were accepted.

TREASURER'S REPORT: A report for the month of November was presented.  Copies will be forwarded to the city's Mayor and Council.

STANDING COMMITTEES:

A. Budget: Betty H. agreed to substitute for Mary Ryan in producing the monthly budget sheet during her absence. Betty is using Quicken for this purpose so the report will look different.   Jill helped Betty balance the RSI checkbook.

B. Ways & Means: The total income for the Holiday Bazaar is $5,189.60.  Ron thanked Betty B. for all her work organizing the Bazaar and for everyone who helped her.  Betty B. thanked everyone who worked on the Bazaar.

C. Bing We will have Bingo every Wednesday in December.  Ron needs callers for next week.

D. Correspondence/Memorial: Louise will handle correspondence for Betty H while Betty takes over the Treasurer responsibilities from Mary R.

E. Gift /Thrift Shop: We made $2,366.00 in sales, paid out $661.73 to consignors and deposited $1,593.98.

F. Publicity: The ad for the Bazaar ran in the Gazette one week before as a paid ad and for free in the community section. We also had a story in Rockville Reports and it was listed on The Rockville Channel.

G. Senior Citizens Commission: The commission will present their report on affordable housing for seniors on February 7, 2005 at 5:30 p.m. to the Mayor and Council.  Nancy McIntyre is preparing a forum on elderly citizens living in Rockville and their issues. 

H. Hispanic Services Report: No report.

I. Asian Services Report: Chu was unable to attend the meeting but asked Ron if we could post the winners from the Bazaar.  He also asked about the fees and books for English classes and his concerns were referred to Lorraine Schack.

OLD BUSINESS:

Jefferson Pilot Annuity decision will be tabled until the January 2005 meeting.

George received an update on flu shots from CDC.  We gave over 300 flu shots on December 15th and 316 on December 20th.

A task force is being formed regarding traffic around the Senior Center.  Some Woodley Gardens residents are requesting that the Carnation Drive entrance be closed and open Gude Drive.  We will have traffic counts to see how much traffic enters the Senior Center in January and February.  Traffic calming may be used in the Woodley Gardens neighborhood.

NEW BUSINESS: 

Juan Gascue sent a card to RSI thanking everyone on the board and mentioning how much everyone meant to him. Juan recommended Sophia Stoll to take his place on the board.  George made a motion to request that the Mayor and Council appoint Sophia Stoll to the RSI board.  Marty seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  Jill will prepare a letter for Ron’s signature requesting the appointment.

The volunteer of the year award will be presented in May.  We will advertise that we need nominations in the February newsletter.  We will have the meeting to make the selection in mid April.

RSI pays for the entertainment at Supper Club.  Could we also give money to the Carnation Players?  Marty made a motion to create a $100.00 fund for the Carnation Players.  Betty B. seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  Judy Beck will submit her receipts from the Carnation Players to Betty H.

STAFF REPORT:

Jill handed out Yard Sale and Holiday Bazaar Comparison sheets.

The roof is almost finished.

Juan sent Jill an email wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.

The Senior Center staff were asked to come up with 8% in cuts to their budget.  Then they were asked to come in on target with their budget but implement any cost savings that they felt could be easily achieved.  There were some reductions made to the Social Services division budget.  Money was transferred from taxi coupons to electricity for the Center and Supper Club funding was decreased to help cover heating oil costs.  The membership fee will stay the same.

We will be closed on December 24, 25, 31, 2004 and January 1, 2005.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:10 p.m.  The next meeting is scheduled for January 18, 2005.
