Betty Hughes will work with the Crafters. Judy Beck will work with Young In Heart on a basket for the raffle. George Galasso will donate a basket to the raffle. Melissa McKenna will organize a basket for the raffle. We need to be clear about what can be donated in a basket - everything must be new and non-perishable. Betty will also contact other club presidents to see if the clubs will donate baskets. Rusty will bring the petty cash for the Bazaar. Betty will speak with Martha Finley about the County Health Department’s baked goods procedures. B. Correspondence/Memorial: We received one donation for January in memory of Lois Darling. C. Bingo Bingo is doing fine. We currently order supplies weekly and we are being charged fuel charges. We are going to try to order supplies once a month. D. Outreach: Vivian Dupuy contacted 2 people in Rockville who said they didn't receive the senior center calendar (note: if they were older than 75 and a non-member they were not sent a calendar). She thinks we need better information on the Rockville Channel about what goes on at the Senior Center. Lorraine Schack is working on new ads for TRC. Jill will put something about getting information from TRC in the newsletter. I. Fundraising: No report. J. Volunteers: No report. K. Senior Citizens Commission: We are working on a home maintenance program for seniors. The focus is keeping people in their houses. OLD BUSINESS: A copy of the letter that RSI sent to the Mayor and Council regarding the Planning Commission’s decision to defer the parking lot expansion was given to all board members. Woodley Gardens Civic Association had their elections. Jim Reshovsky is the new president. We will begin liaison meetings with the neighborhood soon. The By-Laws have been revised and distributed to all board members. Some changes were made to the revisions. Rusty Embrey made a motion to approve the bylaws with revisions. Pete Sante seconded the motion. Motion carried. NEW BUSINESS: Lorraine Schack is working with RSI to apply for a grant to help develop a curriculum for English classes. RSI is supporting this grant, which is only given to nonprofit organizations. Rinn Shinn would like to see classes in good manners for the members. It was suggested that it would be interesting to have lectures on customs of various cultures and differences from American customs. George congratulated Jill on being elected as the Maryland Delegate to the National Institute of Senior Centers. STAFF REPORT: Please encourage members to nominate volunteers for the Estelle Berberian Volunteer of the Year Award. Budget hearings are coming up with the Mayor and Council. We are working with the City Manager on enhancement requests. We will not be getting any more positions, but will be getting money for marketing. Chris Klopfer will get additional money for classes. Membership for residents will be raised to $30 per year beginning July 1, 2008. Staff will be attending the National Council On The Aging Convention in Washington, DC in March. Construction for the expansion to the senior center has been put off until FY10 with the planning and design occurring in FY09. So far it looks like we will get $700,000 in funding from the Maryland Department of Aging. We need to wait until the Governor approves the budget to verify this amount. The meeting was adjourned at 2:35 p.m. The next meeting is Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. |
