Fundraising: Betty Hughes suggested that we sell plants at the Bazaar. Mary Barber will look into the possibility of getting volunteers to pick up the plants and sell them. Betty also said that it is hard to get people to help on her committee - so many of the active people are already busy. She also suggested that we try and sell raffle tickets at the shopping centers. J. Volunteers: No report. K. Senior Citizens Commission: Pete Sante distributed copies of his preliminary study on lifetime memberships based on life expectancy. If we did this the money would go to the City of Rockville and then when a member's membership came up we would transfer this money to the membership account. If someone passed away before all of their money was used then the remainder would go to RSI. If someone outlived the amount they paid they would not pay any more additional money for membership. There was lengthy discussion on the merits of the plan. Further information as needed to determine whether it is worthwhile. Jill will get information from other facilities and see whether we should expand on this idea. Mary pointed out that many volunteers who get free memberships from their volunteer hours then donate $25.00 to RSI. The Senior Commission will donate a basket to the Bazaar raffle. OLD BUSINESS: George signed off on the grant that Lorraine Schack is working on with RSI. It is an application for a grant to help develop a curriculum for English classes. NEW BUSINESS: A nominating committee was formed for the RSI elections. Ron is the chair and Rusty and Mary Jane are committee members. Two people have already submitted their applications. We still need more applications. We need to give applicants copies of the bylaws with what is expected of them highlighted. Jill spoke with Claire Funkhauser, City Clerk and the Mayor will continue as with past mayors in appointing whom the board suggests. The board decided that they would suggest Betty Ball and Betty Briscoe be appointed. Jill will write a letter for George to submit to the Mayor and Council. Jill reminded board members that if they are running again that they need to submit a new application. We need to get nominations for the Volunteer of the Year Award. We also need suggestions for the Corporate Award. Rinn was concerned about the way the free bread is given out. He asked if it could be changed from handicapped and working volunteers get in line first to just handicapped get in line first. Jill will speak with Stuart about changing this. STAFF REPORT: There will be some improvements to the center soon. The stairs from the kitchen parking lot to the center will be repaired. The potholes in the back driveway to the parking lot will be repaired. There are underground pipes that are clogged. And the garden plot will get a second water line underneath. Before we can continue with the expansion we have to establish a liaison with the neighborhood. The President of the Woodley Gardens Neighborhood, Jim Reshovsky, wants to have more information about the expansion before forming the committee.
