Re: Chair Report No report.
Re: Old Business Audrey Beck spoke briefly about the Aging In Place Committee meeting that was held July 13th with Kathy Neale, Pete Sante and Lorraine Schack. She advised that the committee has been working on ideas to help Rockville senior residents with the difficulties of remaining in their homes such as lawn care, snow shoveling, plumbing repairs etc. Often these become either too difficult to handle alone or cost prohibitive. As the committee gathers ideas they have spoken with Sylvia George of Elderly Ministries to assess that organization and their funding that runs their programs for the elderly. Audrey noted that a program has been scheduled for November 2, 2006, 12:30 – 4:00 pm entitled “Seniors: Live Better at Home” that will have a significant amount of information that should help seniors who wish to remain in their own homes. The speakers will include representatives from the Senior Beacon, the Community Partners, state and county Departments on Aging, National Aging in Place, etc. In closing it was noted that the Senior Commission would be a co-sponsor of the event with refreshments and gifts.
Re: New Business Lorraine explained that she and Jill Hall have been working with the Communications Team at City Hall in an effort to develop new and different ways to ‘get the word out’ to Rockville residents about all the programs and services that are available to Rockville seniors. She went on to explain that one idea that has surfaced is to try ‘live feeds’ on the Rockville Cable Channel that will broadcast some of the speakers and events held at the Senior Center. Another possibility will be a four-page insert in one of the fall Rockville Reports. During the discussion it was recommended that the Senior Center ask that a listing of services and a calendar of events be included in Rockville’s church and neighborhood association newsletters. Kathy Neale said she would be glad to work with the King Farm Neighborhood Association as there is currently a program scheduled and there are several senior friendly residences and activities already in existence or planned. Kathy also advised the Commissioners that the Long Range Plan for Senior Services Task Force had their final meeting last week. They now have a summary of all their recommendations and the Commission will receive copies of their plan prior to its distribution to the Mayor and Council.
Re: Staff Report Lorraine said the Center has received information and flyers on the new free Ride-On bus service for seniors and there is a large supply of applications for identification cards for the Ride-On and Metro services in the front office. She went on to say that the new Chinese speaking Outreach Worker position has been approved and she hoped to be able to hire someone quickly. Lorraine also mentioned that the Computer Lab Manager position is open and that she will be doing interviews. In closing she advised that Attorney General Curran would be coming to the Center August 10th to talk about the state of affairs in Maryland. There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 11:10 a.m.
