Re: Public Hearings
SRB2009-00500– 1038 Rockville Pike, Verizon Wireless
The applicant is requesting a modification to permit a building sign that does not conform to the shopping center’s current sign concept plan of illuminated block letters in a black/white Plexiglas sign mounted on a raceway. During the daylight hours, the letters are black and when illuminated at night, the letters are white.
Ken Padgett with J&M Services represented Verizon Wireless. Mr. Padgett explained that Verizon Wireless is applying for a new storefront sign. The application is for a corporate logo sign with a red check mark and a red “Z” in the Verizon text, which are the registered trademark and a requirement of the Verizon corporate office. .
Mr. Worthing questioned whether there was information on other stores in the area with the type of sign proposed by Verizon. Mr. Padgett replied that he does not have specific numbers of stores in Montgomery County; he is working on permit applications in other jurisdictions in Montgomery County such as Aspen Hill Shopping Center and Montgomery Village Shopping Center for Verizon stores with the same sign.
Ms. Goehrung questioned the size of the sign. Ms. Dietrich explained that the size of the proposed sign complies with the size requirements of the Rockville Sign Ordinance. Verizon also had approval from the landlord of the shopping center.
Mr. Worthing moved, seconded by Ms. Goehrung to approve SRB2009-00500– 1038 Rockville Pike, Verizon Wireless as submitted. The motion passed on a vote of 2-0.
