Re:  Public Hearings

SRB2009-00504- 15245 Shady Grove Road, Children’s National Medical Center

The applicant is requesting a modification to permit a sign on the subject office building that does not meet the property’s current sign concept plan.  The sign concept plan for this property requires gold anodized letters, preferably Helvetica bold and back lit neon.  There is one other sign on the building that meets the current sign concept plan for the property.  This property is zoned MXE, which limits the total signage on the property to a maximum of 250 square feet.  The proposed sign and the other existing sign do not exceed the maximum allowable signage.

Steven Christner, owner of Sterico Signs, presented the applicant’s request.  Mr. Christner discussed the color changes for the proposed sign that does not meet the property’s current sign concept plan.  Mr. Christner introduced Ms. Dana Izaguirre, property manager for the building.  He noted that Ms. Izaguirre represents the Teacher’s Association, which is the owner of the building.  Mr. Christner stated that the Teacher’s Association has approved the proposed sign.  He said a letter from the Teacher’s Association was sent to the City stating its approval of the sign.  Mr. Christner also introduced Ernie Galyen, who is his partner at Sterico Signs and Eric Watson, who represents Children’s National Medical Center.

Mr. Christner stated that the proposed sign is described as a box sign and a channel letter sign with a large bear logo with the colors of red, white and black.  Mr. Christner stated that they are proposing the letters “National Medical Center” to be black in an eleven-inch box..  It is a national logo and recognized all over the country.  The letters “Children” would be red in a twenty-inch box.  Currently, there is a temporary banner on the building through the permission of the City with the red, black and white colors.

The Board asked questions regarding the number of Children’s National Medical Centers in the United States; the national logo colors of the Center; size and type of lettering on the sign, placement of the sign on the building, and, a description of the Medical Center.

Mr. Watson explained that the color of the bear is normally brown, but because of the color of the building, they have decided that a black bear would be better suited for the building.

In response to Mr. Worthing, Mr. Christner described the other signage on the building.

After further discussion, Mr. Worthing moved, seconded by Ms. Goehrung to approve SRB2009-00504- 15245 Shady Grove Road, Children’s National Medical Center as submitted.  The motion passed unanimously.

In response to Mr. Christner regarding the banner, Ms. Dietrich stated that she would extend the banner sign on the building for two weeks until the approved signage has been installed.
