These Technical Guides are designed to provide summary information on rehabilitation and maintenance work most commonly needed at designated historic properties. The information may also be useful to owners of older homes who wish to restore and retain the historic significance of their properties, even if they do not currently intend to seek historic designation. Each guide covers a specific topic so they can be read individually as specific issues arise. The guides are not intended to be comprehensive and detailed explanations, but are designed to serve as a starting point in planning work at one of Rockville's historic properties. Some people are hesitant about obtaining historic designations, thinking they will severely limit what they can do with their properties. These guides will demonstrate these concepts are incorrect. Most historic sites are not “frozen in time,” as one might expect with such properties as Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello or our local Beall-Dawson House. Changes and upgrades may be incorporated into historic sites in ways that do not harm long-term preservation efforts. Unattended older properties, or ones that do not receive proper attention, will rapidly deteriorate. However, a well-preserved historic site can provide its residents a home with special characteristics that will be enjoyed and appreciated by family and friends. Through these guides, the City of Rockville will help the owners of older homes get maximum pleasure, and value, from their properties.
