Want to go solar? Join the Solar Co-op in Montgomery County!

Following the success of Rockville's first solar co-op in 2015, another solar co-op will be available to Rockville residents in the summer of 2016. Based on the same principle as buying in bulk, the group will go through the process of going solar together by working with a local nonprofit to select an installer.

Joining the Montgomery County Co-op is not a commitment to purchase the panels, co-op members will have the option to purchase panels based on the group pricing. Each member signs an individual contract with the chosen installer, but all participants get the group discount.

Rockville Solar Co-op 2015

With the support of a Department of Energy grant to the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), Rockville residents were eligible for a residential solar cooperative (co-op) program in 2015. The solar co-op included a COG supported solar consultant that lead education and outreach efforts, provided technical expertise, and helped consumers lower installation and equipment costs through a bulk purchase process.

Thanks to outreach support by the Rockville Environment Commission and MD SUN, the Rockville Solar Co-op was the largest co-op to date in Maryland both in terms of the number of people reached (info sessions and sign-ups) and the number of signed contracts.
  • Total members in co-op: 207
  • Total contracts signed: 63 (30%)
  • Total installed system size: 441.78 kW
  • Approximate energy investment: $1,281,100
