Tax Credit Information
Availability of Tax Credits
Tax credits are available for properties located within designated historic districts, or that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. For any one project, a property owner may apply for all programs (local, state, and federal) for which they qualify. Summary information is provided below, as well as links for applications and additional information.

The City of Rockville participates in Montgomery County's preservation tax credit program. As of July 1, 2013, owners of designated historic properties will be allowed 25% of eligible expenditures to be refunded from property taxes paid.  The County enacted this increase on July 16, 2013 with Tax Credit Bill 14-13. The County Council said that this is a way “to give the owners of historic properties some incentive to continue to invest in them and keep them up for our future generations to also appreciate. This bill is one way we can encourage preservation of the great properties that were once so prevalent around our County, but are now so rare.” The Mayor and Council sent in a letter of support for this bill.

Residential and commercial properties may qualify for tax credits on interior and exterior work, with 10%, 20%, or 25 % of eligible expenditures refunded from Maryland state income taxes.

Income-producing properties only may qualify for 20% of eligible expenditures to be refunded from Federal income taxes owed.
