Sign Code
Sign Regulations are adopted as part of the City's Zoning Ordinance. As a general rule, all temporary or permanent signs require a sign permit. For signs that do not qualify for a standard permit, the Sign Review Board may grant a modification from the standard regulations. The Board meets every six weeks, as needed. Residents may also contact Tamara Dietrich at 240-314-8254 for additional information.

Residential Signs
Signs in residential areas are limited to 150 square inches. Private residences do not need permits. Certain institutional uses, such as churches and nursing homes, are permitted to have larger signs, which require permits. Street addresses are not considered to be signs.

Commercial Signs
Commercial signs are regulated by the zone in which they are located. All commercial signs require a sign permit. Check the zoning map to locate the zone for your business. The following types of signs are not permitted: flags, banners, pennants, portable signs, changeable message, flashing or blinking signs.

Election Signs
Election signs are limited to five square feet per sign. No permit is needed. Signs should be removed seven days following the election.
