Service Basics
Determine your weekly collection date- Use the recycling and refuse map, enter or zoom to your address and click on your property to find you route number and collection day.

If your address is not serviced by the City, please check with your property manager or association for details on their service.

Start or stop a recycling and refuse service account- You may open or close an account by completing this form.  If there are any questions regarding your utility billing account please call 240-314-8420 or email 

Get a Cart
- learn about your cart options, including cart sizes and how to order, change, return and care for your carts. 
  • If you need a different size cart or a second cart, click here or call 240-314-8568. Swapping your cart is free.  
  • If you move- It is important that you call 240-314-8568 to arrange for your carts to be picked up. The carts are City property and there is a charge for carts that are not returned.

Holiday Collections- If a holiday falls on a weekday and your regularly scheduled collection day is on or after the holiday, your collection may shift a day.

Collection Tips
  • Place your brown and gray carts in the curb or alleyway (depending on your collection location) by 6 a.m. on your collection day.
  • Place carts with wheels to the curb and the lid opening to the street. Do not block mailboxes.
  • Place yard waste at the curb (not in the alleyway) in paper lawn bags or easily emptied 32-gallon, rigid containers on your collection day by 6 a.m. 
  • If you know your collection has been missed notify the Recycling and Refuse Office or call 240-314-8568. If it is after-hours please leave a message with the type of collection missed and your address. We will attempt to rectify this as soon as possible. 
  • After collection, carts must be removed from the curb or alleyway within 24 hours.
  • You can identify your cart by recording the serial number on the front of the cart.

Back Door Collection- Residents who are either temporarily or permanently unable to move their carts to the curb can apply for back door service. Residents must re-apply for this service each year.

Businesses, Apartments and Condominiums
- While the City does not provide collection services for businesses, apartments and condominiums, it is mandatory for these properties to recycle.  The City's multi-family and commercial recycling program is implemented by Montgomery County. To learn more about business and multifamily recycling requirements, reporting and education programs, visit the following Montgomery County programs:
