Hometown Holidays Will Be a Bloomin’ Good Time With New Flower, Garden Show
Rockville’s Annual Memorial Day Weekend of Events Grows With First Annual Show as Part of Sunday, May 29, Activities
‘Hootie and the Blowfish’ Will Headline Hometown Holidays Weekend of Activities on Saturday, May 28, in Town Center
ROCKVILLE, Md., May 16, 2005 — Rockville Town Center will flourish with excitement as the City presents the first annual Rockville Flower and Garden Show as part of the Hometown Holidays weekend of events on May 28-30.
Many local farmers and nurseries will give live demonstrations, offer gardening tips and advice and answer questions on Maryland Avenue from 12 noon-6 p.m. on Sunday, May 29. They also will be selling their finest plants. The show is sponsored by radio station WMAL-AM-630.
“The City felt a flower and garden show would be a great complement to the already highly successful Rockville Art Show, which debuted for the first time last year,” said Mike Henry, the City’s special events coordinator. “We are confident visitors to Rockville will enjoy this colorful new addition to the many exciting events happening on Sunday.”
The Flower and Garden Show is one of a variety of activities planned for Rockville Town Center as the City once again hold the Washington area’s largest Memorial Day weekend celebration.
The weekend will include the Taste of Rockville, which features food from about 30 area restaurants on Saturday; the Rockville Art Festival on Saturday and Sunday; the annual “Ride for Rockville” city bike tour on Sunday; and the 61st Annual Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade on Monday.
Hootie and the Blowfish will highlight a weekend of free entertainment in downtown Rockville as they take the main stage at 9 p.m. Saturday. Concerts also will be performed on Saturday by singer-songwriter Lea (12:30 p.m.); country singer Marge Calhoun (3 p.m.); the Hula Monsters, a swing band with a Hawaiian flavor (5:30 p.m.); and Last Train Home (7 p.m.). There will be free live music concerts throughout the day on Sunday. Highlighting the entertainment will be The Supertonics, an all male A Cappella group from Wootton High School at 4 p.m. on the Redbrick Courthouse Stage.
The introduction of the new Flower and Garden show has already created much interest as Hometown Holidays continues to expand to a weekend that has something for everybody. A variety of special activities will accompany the many vendors selling fresh flowers and plants.
Gardening expert Jos Rosen of WMAL’s “Garden Sense” will be on hand to answer questions. “Miss Poppy” (Elizabeth Ann Neary, a junior member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 86, A.L.A.) will sell poppies to be worn on Memorial Day to continue the tradition that honors those who have died serving the country. And Montgomery County Master Gardener organizations will give presentations about turf, pest and soil management.
On Sunday, May 29, Peerless Rockville, the award-winning nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the City’s history, will be organizing free tours themed “Discover Colonial Rockville! Trails, Taverns, and The Road to War.” The tours will leave from the Red Brick Courthouse in Town Center between 12 noon and 6 p.m. Participants can meet and talk with French and Indian War re-enactors and view a special exhibit featuring 18th century surveying instruments and other tools and artifacts. Kids' activities include “enlisting” in the regiment and drilling.
