Rockville to Discuss Town Center Traffic At Workshop on Tuesday, May 24
All Citizens Invited to Offer Thoughts as Construction Progress Continues Toward Downtown Redevelopment

ROCKVILLE, Md., May 19, 2005—A workshop on proposed traffic measures for the Rockville Town Center area and surrounding neighborhoods will be held on Tuesday, May 24, from 7-9 p.m. at Richard Montgomery High School.
At the workshop, citizens will be asked to review speeding and cut-through traffic problems identified by volunteers who live in areas within or near Town Center. Citizens can offer new ideas on how to protect adjacent communities from excessive traffic.

Traffic, which is always a concern in developing urban areas, is an increasing issue as the City makes progress on redevelopment of its downtown. Construction is ongoing at the Rockville Town Square site, which is Phase I of the redevelopment of Town Center. That 15-acre mixed-use development will bring residential, retail, restaurant, cultural and office space. The new Rockville Regional Library will be part of Town Square. Eventually, it is expected that Town Center will expand to more than 60 acres.

Discussion at the workshop will include traffic flow on Rockville streets. Citizens will be asked to help identify how traffic calming measures may affect traffic throughout the entire area. Following the workshop, the Rockville’s appointed Traffic and Transportation Commission will discuss proposed ideas that may reduce speeding and cut-through traffic in neighborhoods.

A list of communities that may be affected by speeding and cut-through traffic is posted online at http://www.rockvillemd.gov/residents/traffic/traffic-calming-workshop.htm.

For more information, or to make a suggestion concerning Town Center traffic issues, contact Katherine Kelly of Rockville’s Transportation Division at kkelly@rockvillemd.gov or 240-314-8527.
