Rockville’s Men’s Shelters to Donate Part Of Profits From Car Wash to Katrina Relief
Residents of Jefferson House and Chase Partnership Shelters Will Donate From Money Raised on Saturday, Sept. 10
ROCKVILLE, Md., September 8, 2005 – Twice a year, the residents of two Rockville shelters for homeless men hold car washes and use the profits toward the very basic needs of the residents. However, this week the residents of the Jefferson House and Chase Partnership shelters have seen that the victims of Hurricane Katrina desperately need help, and decided to donate a portion of the profits from their fall car wash to be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, to the victims of the storm.
The car wash will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 114 West Montgomery Ave., in the rear parking lot of the Rockville United Methodist Church. The residents and other volunteers will be washing cars ranging from $5 for a basic wash to $35 for a full wash and detailing.
“The residents wanted to help out in some kind of way, and this is their way to help,” said Darrell Butler, housing director of the two shelters. “These men are less fortunate than most folks, but they are more likely to identify with people who have gone through the experience of being homeless.”
Butler said raising money for others in need is important to the residents of Jefferson House and Chase Partnership.
“This will not only be beneficial to the hurricane victims, it will be beneficial to the residents of Jefferson and Chase as they again become part of the mainstream of our community,” said Butler. “It shows these men that they can again contribute.”
Butler said profits of car washes are used for a variety of purposes, ranging from the purchase of books for residents attending classes to shelter supplies (food) and to help with transportation costs for working residents. Funds also can be used for special purposes, such as a recent incident in which money was used to pay for a resident to attend his mother’s funeral that was out of the area.
Chase Partnership House has been operating since 1987 and provides 36 homeless, addicted men of Montgomery County. Its services include sleeping quarters, showers, laundry facilities and meals. These services are provided while each client progresses through his individual treatment program and into mainstream society. These services help the clients manage issues that would otherwise impede his progress. Along with the basic services, each resident receives a personalized Service Plan Agreement, along with case management. Chase also provides a computer lab to help the clients pursue a GED high school diploma and employment opportunities.
The Jefferson House has been operating since 1991 and provides affordable permanent housing to formerly homeless men who have completed a formal addiction treatment program and continue to work in their recovery through relapse prevention. The men are provided with case management assistance that offers individual counseling, house meetings, personal goal guidance, nutritional education and daily living skills. Throughout the year, six to 10 men are served. The house is supervised by the housing director and a case manager of Community Ministries of Rockville, with the support of a resident manager on site. The case manager works with each resident individually on budgeting and financial issues, housing services, personal goals, community service work, providing outside speakers, nutritional assistance, educational assistance and follow up on relapse prevention.
