Rockville, Md. is Designated a "Preserve America" Community
ROCKVILLE, Md., March 3, 2008 – Rockville, Md. has been named a Preserve America Community, a White House initiative that recognizes communities that protect and celebrate their heritage. This designation recognizes Rockville’s success in using historic assets for economic development and community revitalization while also encouraging residents and visitors to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs.
“We take great pride in celebrating Rockville’s rich heritage and history,” said Rockville Mayor Susan Hoffmann. “To have our First Lady recognize Rockville with this honor means a great deal to our residents who are so desirous of preserving and protecting our past.”
Preserve America is a White House initiative that encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy cultural and natural heritage. The goals of the initiative include a greater shared knowledge about the nation’s past, strengthened regional identities and local pride, increased local participation in preserving the country’s cultural and natural heritage assets, and support for the economic vitality of communities.
Since the program began in 2003, First Lady Laura Bush has designated 585 communities as Preserve America Communities. Benefits of designation include White House recognition, eligibility to apply for Preserve America grants, listing in a Web-based Preserve America community directory, inclusion in national and regional press releases, official notification of designation to state tourism offices and visitors bureaus, and enhanced community visibility and pride.
Other Maryland Preserve America Communities include Annapolis, Baltimore and Frederick.
