Rockville to Launch Asian Pacific American Task Force, Promoting Diversity in Community
Appointments will be made in May; Applications due to City Clerk’s Office April 25

ROCKVILLE, Md., March 24, 2008 — In an effort to enrich diversity and the quality of life in the City of Rockville, the Mayor and Council created the Asian Pacific American Task Force to foster meaningful dialogue between members of the Asian-American community and the city’s government. Member appointments to the 12-seat Task Force will be made in May. Those interested in becoming a member can submit an Expression of Interest Form and a resume to the City Clerk by April 25.

The Asian Pacific American Task Force will help Rockville become more aware of the needs of the Asian American community, with efforts to inform the community on the many services and opportunities Rockville has to offer.

“This Task Force will foster better communication between Rockville’s city government and its Asian-American residents,” said Mayor Susan Hoffmann. “This is another way that Rockville builds bridges within our community while recognizing and celebrating our diversity.”

The Task Force will consist of no more than 12 people; Rockville residents and business owners of Asian-American birth or heritage, and those who are not Asian but who have Asian-American family members are encouraged to apply.
Task Force members will be involved with several activities and celebrations that promote Asian-American heritage such as: formal commemoration of the Chinese New Year, recognition of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May, promotion of cultural exchanges, participation in business activities such as the Asian-American business conference, and the exploration of a Sister City relationship between Rockville and a city in China.

To apply for consideration, submit an Expression of Interest Form, available online at www.rockvillemd.gov/government/commissions/InterestForm.pdf to the City Clerk’s Office at 111 Maryland Ave. by April 25. A resume, in addition to the form, is recommended.  For more information, contact the City Clerk’s Office at 240-314-8280.
