City of Rockville Compensation Commission Seeks Input From Residents
Mayor and Council Compensation Will Be Reviewed
Rockville, Md., February 4, 2009 - The City of Rockville's Compensation Commission would like to hear from residents about salaries for the mayor and council. The commission, a five-member appointed panel, meets every two years to recommend possible changes to the compensation of the mayor and councilmembers.
The commission will conduct meetings on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m., Tuesday, March 10, at 7 p.m. and Thursday, March 19, at 9 a.m. All meetings will be held at City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave. and are open to the public.
The commission seeks input in the following areas: how compensation of the mayor and councilmembers should be determined; the frequency of mayor and councilmember compensation; who should determine the compensation of the mayor and councilmembers; and other general matters related to the compensation of the mayor and councilmembers.
Currently, the annual monetary compensation for the mayor is $25,750. Councilmembers receive $20,600 annually.
City code requires the commission to consider the duties and responsibilities of the mayor and council, the compensation of elected officials in comparable jurisdictions and any increase or decrease in the cost of living. Other factors the commission deems relevant also may be considered in making recommendations.
Persons wishing to submit written testimony should do so by e-mail before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2009. Submissions may be e-mailed to the deputy city clerk at bbean@rockvillemd.gov.
The commission is required to make a recommendation to the Mayor and Council by Tuesday, March 31. Any change in compensation would not take effect until after the November 2009 elections.
