Rockville Celebrates Black History Month with Tribute Performance

Rockville, Md., February 4, 2009 - The Finest! Youth Performance Troupe presents its 14th annual African-American Heritage Production, "Broadway Bound: African Americans on Broadway" on Friday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre.

Using a variety of music, acting and dancing, "Broadway Bound" tells the story of African-American artists' contributions to American culture onstage and behind the scenes.

Set in New York City on Broadway, the show features portrayals of everyday people going about their lives as well as Josephine Baker and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. The performance includes scenes from "Raisin in the Sun," "Purlie," "Sarafina," "Fences" and "The Color Purple" and a rousing dance number from "Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk" that will have the audience tapping their feet.

"The show promises a little of the dramatic, some comedy, lots of music and very entertaining family fun," said Karen Rawlins, community recreation programs supervisor. "We tell the story of a people through different forms of African-American music, acting, and dance by paying tribute to activists, inventors, educators and other professionals and historical figures."

Kashi-Tara and Kelly Chauncey, Actors' Equity Association professionals, provide artistic direction and original choreography for the performance.
