Rockville to Maintain Operations of RedGate Municipal Golf Course
ROCKVILLE, Md., March 3, 2009 - Rockville will maintain operations of RedGate Municipal Golf Course, following efforts to negotiate a possible lease with the Montgomery County Revenue Authority.
The possibility of the Revenue Authority leasing and operating the City-owned championship course has been the subject of negotiation since late January. The City's interest in an agreement was aimed at keeping a top-notch golf course in Rockville and under the City's ownership, while allowing the Revenue Authority to add a 10th course to the nine it now operates in the county.
Following discussions about a possible lease, the Revenue Authority opted against taking on RedGate's operations at this time, but expressed interest in maintaining a relationship with the City.
"We think RedGate is an exceptional golf course that we would be proud to operate," said Keith Miller, executive director of the Montgomery County Revenue Authority. "Unfortunately, the timing isn't ideal."
In 2006, the Mayor and Council approved an aggressive business plan aimed at helping the course become financially stable. The plan included additional marketing and course improvements to generate more rounds at the 71-par, 18-hole course.
The City pursued a lease with the Revenue Authority because of its longstanding history with public golf courses in the county. At the same time, City staff understood the importance of maintaining high quality programs for RedGate golfers, including annual passes, customer loyalty discounts and tournaments.
"We appreciate the Revenue Authority's interest, and have great respect for their operation of Montgomery County golf," said City Manager Scott Ullery. "Burt Hall did an outstanding job negotiating on behalf of the City's interests. We will continue our efforts to improve RedGate's financial performance and maintain it as one of the area's truly outstanding courses."
