City's Thomas Farm Community Center Honored by Peerless Rockville
Award Recognizes Design and Site of New Facility

Rockville, Md., April 21, 2009 - The City of Rockville Department of Recreation and Parks was recently selected as a winner of a 2009 Peerless Rockville Preservation Award for the design and site of the new Thomas Farm Community Center, 700 Fallsgrove Drive. The awards committee unanimously recognized the community center's "green" design, including the use of a geothermal heating and cooling system in the building and pervious concrete pavement in parking areas.

"We are honored to receive this award from Peerless Rockville," said Burt Hall, director of Recreation and Parks. "The Thomas Farm Community Center, our first community center west of I-270, is a great facility that enhances the neighborhood and showcases the City's commitment to environmentally-friendly projects."

The site of the community center was chosen to minimize the impact on existing trees and the environment and sustainable building techniques were used during construction. The facility also features low-E (emissivity) glass that reduces temperature loss, skylights to reduce the need for artificial lighting, energy-efficient fixtures and indigenous landscaping materials on the grounds.

Peerless Rockville presents awards to community groups for programs, preservation work and quality design and construction that contribute to the city's architectural, cultural and environmental heritage.

The award will be presented on Thursday, June 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Grand Courtroom of the Red Brick Courthouse in Rockville Town Center.
